Iraq records huge rise in birth defects

...a new study reports a "staggering rise" in birth defects among Iraqi children conceived in the aftermath of the war.

High rates of miscarriage, toxic levels of lead and mercury contamination and spiralling numbers of birth defects ranging from congenital heart defects to brain dysfunctions and malformed limbs have been recorded. Even more disturbingly, they appear to be occurring at an increasing rate in children born in Fallujah, about 40 miles west of Baghdad.

There is "compelling evidence" to link the increased numbers of defects and miscarriages to military assaults...

The two areas that come in for special attention here are Fallujah, the site of two assaults by American forces, and Basra, where British forces were active. Technology may have brought us precision targeting but it has also given us contamination with heavy metals and the attendant health problems. Iraqis will be paying a high price for this war for generations. Will any of those in the American or British governments whose actions led to the invasion be held accountable?

The title of the post is a quote from Barack Obama.

Will similar studies be done in Afghanistan and will they find similar results?

OMG 'soon it could be everyone'. The depraved vermin of the Defense Departments have the nerve to use the word humanitarian while citing the Geneva Conventions. Crimes against Humanity! And I suppose it kills 2 birds with one stone, no standing intelligent armies in the future for those countries and to continue the false narrative of the American Dream.

No one will ever be held accountable. Agent Orange was spread on an army base in New Brunswick but our government stated that Agent Orange is safe, even as cancer rates skyrocketed. Our soldiers will also be suffering from DU contamination but our governments do nothing. This is also occurring in the US and they are ignored. Children of our soldiers are being born deformed but that is ok.
Wherever we attack we leave death and destruction and pat ourselves on the back that 'we brought them democracy'!!!

Thinking of looking backwards, "To ravage, to slaughter, to usurp under false titles, they call empire; and where they make a desert, they call it peace."
That Tacitus guy knew a thing or two. Also, on Islamophobia, "It belongs to human nature to hate those you have injured."

I wonder whether all the Iraqi exiled conspirators who formed part of the US-backed, Iraqi National Congress or the Iraqi-American Council, basically swooped in to make as much money as possible and left when it became abundantly clear that the aftermath was a mess.

Is Ahmed Chalabi still in Iraq? What about Aziz Al-Taee who was another INC spokesperson who went on to partner with the hapless Nick Berg, who was kidnapped and beheaded in Iraq? And wasn't there a Canadian-Iraqi, young one at that, who was also cheer leading the invasion and actually ran for a position in the first post-Saddam election? Where is he now?

What a horror show. I swear I lost all faith in western democracy with the invasion of Iraq. Not that our track record was great but that wholly illegal slaughter was the final tipping point.
