Bizarro does the heavy lifting but I want to highlight this because it's the kind of thing that drives me wild. In his response to an op-ed by David Bercuson in the Globe and Mail, Bizarro points out:
Yes, I'd say it was relevant to point all that out to readers when the op-ed is obviously designed to stifle questions that the civilian and military leadership would rather not answer. It is worth noting that today's piece doesn't have the usual description of Mr. Bercuson that the Mop provides along with op-ed pieces. For instance, in another recent piece by the estimable Bercuson, where he was pointing the way for a Harper extension of the Afghan mission, the Mop wrote: David Bercuson is director of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary, and director of programs at the Canadian Defence and Foreign Affairs Institute.
They didn't note that he is on the Board of the Royal Military College or that Mr. Bercuson is integrally and professionally tied to the Department of National Defence...

Yes, Bercuson's "centre" at U of C gets money from DND. I didn't quite grasp the distinction that Bizarro was making (right after the passage you quote) between the regular grants the centre has had and one "direct" grant, but no matter.
Another one...
A week ago the Ottawa Citizen ran a piece in which the author equated the parliamentary committee on the Canadian mission in Afghanistan with Senator Joe McCarthy's anti-communist witch hunt.
The author's bio at the end read :
"Paul Chapin is a former director general for international security at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. He is an adjunct professor in the School of Policy Studies at Queen's University and a director of the Conference of Defence Associations Institute."
but failed to mention Chapin authored the original agreement.
Blogged it at the Beav
It's part of the agreement for funding that they plant these pieces.
It's part of the agreement for funding that they plant these pieces.
What we have here is taxpayer dollars being laundered through the defence budget and used to pay academics to lobby us on behalf of one of skdadl's favorite acronyms: the MIC.
It's a good thing to remind people once in a while of this: I encourage everyone to ignore anything that comes out of the mouth / pen / computer of anyone associated with the PoliSci department at the U of C. Bercuson, Tom Flanagan, FL Ted Morton, Barry Cooper.... you don't have to be crazy to work there, as the saying goes, but it certainly aids in getting tenure.
