He saw an opportunity to cause grief for, and possibly intimidate, someone who voices opinions with which he doesn't agree and he went for it. I'm sure he knows perfectly well that Zerbisias was being ironic with her comment and I suspect that under different circumstances he wouldn't have cared a bit about what she said.
