Pretty soon we'll be talking some serious money

Josh Marshall notes that someone ran the numbers and figured out that Rudy Giuliani's campaign for the Republican presidential nomination spent $50 million to get a single delegate.

And at that rate Rudy would have needed $60 billion to win the nomination.

And I have no doubt that he would have spent that much if he'd had it.

Under the category of Thank God For Small Mercies, at least we can enjoy a sense of relief that President Rudy "We Need War With Everyone" Giuliani is a phrase we won't have to take seriously for at least four years.

Gee. Fifty million, you say. Gee ... But no. No. Of course I wouldn't. What do you think I am?

Unless McCain picks him as his running mate, somehow manages to defeat the Democratic nominee, and...

...no, it's too horrible to contemplate. I'm sorry I even suggested it. I hope I didn't ruin anyone's appetite.

Or wait -- was I suggesting the same thing you were suggesting, skdadl?

If so, didn't mean to steal your thunder. Just the sort of thing that can happen when one is, you know. Cryptic. Ambiguous. Vague, gnomic, allusive, whatever.

Anyway, knock on wood. McCain's running mate will probably be icky regardless of who (s)he is. Let's just hope it's not THAT icky.

McCain's running mate? Be prepared to get thoroughly creeped out. Joe Lieberman. I wish I could say you heard it here first but it's actually been discussed.

And he's categorically ruled it out, which means he's probably thinking about it.

Yeah, it makes sense. In his own way, Lieberman's been a more loyal Republican than McCain.

Still, I think McCain will probably go with a current or former state governor / lieutenant-governor who can appeal to the base. I'd be really surprised if he picked Romney, and I doubt he'd pick Huckabee either (perhaps that's wishful thinking), but I can't think of any other obvious prospects.
