"Extremist elements" in Liberal party making Dion soft on terrorism: PM

"Extremist elements" in the Liberal caucus are leading party leader Stephane Dion to become soft on terrorism, Prime Minister Stephen Harper alleged in the House of Commons on Thursday.

The prime minister went out of his way on two separate occasions in question period to attack Dion's decision to reverse his party's support of an anti-terror law measures that provides police with additional powers to stop suspected terrorists.
...
When Dion asked Harper a question about the auto industry during question period Thursday, the PM used his response time to attack Dion for his new position.

"For the first time in history we have a leader of the opposition who is soft on terrorism," the PM alleged. "He is refusing to take the advice of Bob Rae, John Manley, Anne McLellan and to back the anti-terrorism provisions that his own government put in place."

Later in question period, the Tories used one of their questions to have a backbench MP ask the PM about Dion's position.

Harper again noted the Liberals who want the special powers extended and accused Dion of "being led by extremist elements in his own caucus."

Does anyone else remember the point in Harper's first campaign as leader when the Conservatives claimed the Liberals were soft on child pornography? I don't think the voters were too impressed. There are attacks you can score points with and attacks that just make you look silly.

I think you should pursue this, Steve. Go for it. Try accusing Dion of giving aid and comfort to the enemy. After all, it's worked so well for your role models.

Given that we have a government that says it will refuse to follow the will of Parliament, and

Given the government is openly trying to stack the bench

I don't see Dion's position as being soft on terrorism - rather it is being firm against bannana republics and the erosion of civil liberties.

Harper is soft on white collar crime. Other crime is but a piss in the wind. Harper would bring in Draconian measures the likes we've seen today where another innocent person was freed by DNA evidence. Harper comes from a guilty until proven innocent mentality, which is not the Canadian way.
Harper and his minions tried to smear Goodale and got caught out.
Harper won't be caught out like this again if he gets his majority.
NO ONE WILL BE TALKING. TRUTH BELONGS TO HARPER ONLY. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!
Harper's Kitty doppelganger Baird will point, shout and salivate on command, but all the frothing and barking will not hide the sad truth that Harper has built his house on shaky ground and he's terrified Canadians will see behind the curtain to the ineffectual little man desperately pulling strings.
Ask Harper in the House about his or his minion's dealings with corporations to integrate Canada with the States and Mexico. Ask him if he's got a name for the vision. Ask him if they've got a name for the "gnu" money: Amero. Ask him.
He'll lie his face off.

As as aside, I've detected a little embarassment on the House side lately. Bobble-head Ambrose is not bobbling so much; Shades Finlay has a distinct look of failure about her, Prentice has been looking particularly gloomy, Clement has been ducking and keeping his eyes down most unbecomingly. Even Geurgais has moved her voice from Minnie Mouse to a more reserved octave. Odious has been pretending to do... stuff. Things are falling apart in Harper's house.

Defininately time to try to scare the be-jeebus out of Canadians for their own good. Use lies if required. Resistance is futile!

Coming froma U.S. perspective, it's laughable how blatantly Harper is stealing from the Rove/Bush/Cheney playbook in nearly everything he does. From trying to accumulate more and more power in the PMO to secrecy to smear tactics such as this.

He's missing out on a golden opportunity for an FLQ media blitz. How come the FLQ threat isn't the lead of every newsbite in the land? I didn't even hear about it until nothing happened yesterday!

Pogge:

Your trackbacks arent working again - at least, not for me they arent. I used trackback for my AM article on Harper pulling a Cheney to this one, and I used your listed trackback, but its not showing up.

I now notice another trackback on a prior article I used here also didnt show up either.

I don't see anything caught in the spam filter but just in case I whitelisted gluemeat.com. We'll see how it goes.

The trackback script itself is certainly working. I get 50 or 60 a day that are identified as spam and junked.

Like Josh's comment above...I'm puzzled as to why they think the "Rove/Bush/Cheney" tactics will work in Canada? Can't you just see potential Liberal ads being formulated with split screens, for example, showing the Harper line then the Bush line?

I just don't get this "soft on terror" stuff...those tactics have been completely discredited in the U.S. yet they continue to ratchet them up?

Just checking, but Rae, Mlellan and John Manley have something else in commen don't they?... hmmm I think none of them are MPs. yep, not a seat between them. So why does anyone really give a fat rats butt about what they think on this legislation right now? Oh, that's right, Harper's trying the ol' divide and conquor. Let's dig up Sir John A. and ask him what he thinks the liberal party is doing today, see if he likes this legislation, and if he would vote for it.

And I'm still laughing at "Liberal extremists", man... what would such a beast look like or think? (Ahhh!!, the unflavoured yogurt in my fridge has radicalized, it's revolting!. No really, it's revolting, I can't eat that crap.)

What about encouraging Suzuki for green pary president then prime minster.Lets go with it for the envir.

Suzuki Prime Minister

I wish I could agree with the sound of tentative approval but there is definitely something going on and it is not good for unity of the Liberals and Dion. While the tendency of a number of people who think they know what to do, each of them being intelligent , capable and having a sort of political entourage, will be to strike independent postures, much worse seems to be afoot. The media writers are moving in to attack Dion right on cue just like computer icons when you push "snap to grid" and trial baloons are being floated from outside the outside, so to speak. And this is when the Cons are tearing away with a faltering direct attack. And sure enough "strategic" which I think is one of the pollsters just doing electronic repeat samples of the same stable of paid responders, comes out with a poll that sure seems a push poll to me.

I remember this happening shortly before the election when all the big papers suddenly came out against Martin and gave a big shove against the government.

If there is a single cause this time it is probably over foreign policy and stems from Dion's leadership going to sunset parts of the terrorism law, and turning cool on Israell. The source would be the Israeli lobby via the endlessly interfering Asper interests. They have grown too big for their britches and it is time they were firmly repulsed. The future of Canada should not be tied to the fortunes of a pushy nation of 7 million engaged in imperialist oppression of its neighbours.
